Background
The 19th & early 20th centuries were the height of the period when Manufactured Gas Plants (MGPs) were producing gas to light cities around the United States until the 1950s. The plants were located near the point of use, close to a water source required for the gas production. Manufactured gas was produced locally from coal, coal/oil mixtures, or from petroleum, giving rise to a range of residual materials. With the advent of electricity and other sources of gas, many sites were leveled and re-developed leaving potentially harmful by-products in place. Today, legacy MGP sites are often surrounded by parks, residential housing and/or industry. Most MGP structures and equipment were dismantled decades ago, but the legacy environmental issues associated with coal tar and other byproducts may remain.
